n the last years of his life, he painted several landscapes featuring wheat fields, all of which evoke a range of emotions. In a letter to his brother he explained his inspiration: ‘I am almost certain that these canvases illustrate what I cannot express in words, that is, how healthy and reassuring I find the countryside.’ His love for the countryside can be seen in the quick and lyrical execution of each stroke that makes every flower and wheat sheaf come alive.
